“Smell is one of the most fascinating and overlooked forms of spirit communication. Known as clairalience or clairolfaction, it involves detecting scents that have no obvious physical source. Spirits often use familiar smells as a form of identification because scent is strongly linked to memory and emotion. A grandfather who smoked cigars may announce his presence through the unmistakable aroma of tobacco. A grandmother may be recognised through the scent of her favourite perfume. Others may bring the fragrance of roses, lavender, pipe smoke, fresh bread, aftershave, or even the smell of a particular workshop or workplace that was significant to them during life. These scents can appear suddenly, linger for a few moments, and then vanish just as quickly.”
“Beyond these three senses, many empaths also experience spirit communication through feeling. This may include sensing a presence nearby, feeling changes in temperature, experiencing emotions that do not belong to them, or simply having an overwhelming sense that someone is standing beside them. Some mediums refer to this as clairsentience, or clear feeling. Through this ability, a spirit may convey emotions such as love, sadness, humour, concern, or reassurance without speaking a single word.
There is also claircognizance, or clear knowing, where information simply arrives in the mind without any obvious source. An empath may suddenly know a spirit's name, understand a personal detail about their life, or receive information that is later verified by the living. Unlike hearing or seeing, this information often arrives instantly and with a strong sense of certainty.”
“In my experience, spirits will often use multiple senses at once. I may hear a voice, smell a familiar scent, and receive a mental image simultaneously. The more pieces of information that come together, the clearer the communication becomes. Much like meeting a living person, every spirit has its own way of expressing itself, and understanding those subtle forms of communication is an important part of developing as an empath and medium.”
Lorna Parker:
“Can souls recognise each other?”
Trinity Jenna:
“According to many spiritual beliefs back through the centuries, souls can recognise one another long after physical life has ended. While the body may pass away, the essence of who we are, the soul, consciousness, or spirit, continues to carry the connections, memories, and bonds formed during life.”
“When this spirit energy communicates through me, I often feel a sense of recognition before any words are exchanged. It is difficult to describe because it goes beyond seeing a face or hearing a voice. The closest comparison I can give is that of a mother instantly knowing which child has entered a room without needing to look. There is an inherent familiarity, an energetic signature unique to every soul.”
“One of the most compelling examples of this occurred during yours and David Quinn’s highly documented case, one that launched the book ‘The Bohlandor Haunting: Three Spirits and a Demon’. During the June 5th, 2021 afternoon investigation, there appeared to be a remarkable interaction between the spirit of Annie Bohlandor and the child spirit Kevin. What stood out was the immediate sense of familiarity and concern Annie displayed toward him. There was no hesitation, no uncertainty. It was as though she instinctively recognised him on a soul level, despite the circumstances that separated them in life.”
“Observing that interaction reinforced my belief that recognition does not rely solely on memory or physical identity. Souls appear to recognise the energy, essence, and emotional imprint of other souls. In many cases, spirits communicate feelings of love, protection, or concern before any identifying information comes through. It is almost as if the emotional bond itself survives beyond death.”
“Many mediums and spiritual practitioners report similar experiences. Spirits who were close in life often seem drawn to one another in the afterlife, and family members frequently describe sensing loved ones arriving together during readings. Some believe that souls travel in groups, maintaining connections across multiple lifetimes, while others view these reunions as evidence that love itself transcends physical existence.”
“The Bohlandor case remains one of the strongest examples of apparent soul recognition. The interaction between Annie and Kevin carried the unmistakable feeling of familiarity and understanding, as though two spirits recognised one another not through appearance or words, but through something much deeper.”
“Whether one views these experiences through a spiritual, religious, or metaphysical lens, they suggest an intriguing possibility: that the relationships we form in life may not end with death, and that somewhere beyond our physical world, souls continue to recognise and find one another.”
“More than often the living just get in the way!”
Lorna Parker:
“Do spirits smell familiar to you?”
Trinity Jenna:
“That's an interesting question, and the answer is yes.”
“One of the ways spirits communicate with me is through scent, a phenomenon often referred to as clairalience or "clear smelling." While sight and hearing tend to receive the most attention in paranormal discussions, scent can be one of the most powerful and convincing forms of spirit communication because of its strong connection to memory and emotion.”
“Spirits can present familiar scents to both myself and others who are present. For example, a strong cigar smell is often reported when someone who enjoyed smoking in life is nearby. Likewise, the scent of a favourite perfume, flowers, fresh tobacco, aftershave, baking bread, or even a particular food can sometimes accompany a spirit's presence. These scents often appear suddenly, without any obvious source, and disappear just as quickly.”
“What makes scent communication particularly fascinating is its ability to evoke recognition. Long before a spirit's identity becomes clear, a familiar fragrance can trigger memories in family members and loved ones. I have witnessed people become emotional after recognising the unmistakable scent of a relative's perfume or the aroma of pipe tobacco that belonged to a grandfather who had passed away many years earlier.”
“For me personally, spirit scents can be incredibly detailed. It is not always a simple smell of flowers or smoke. Sometimes there are layers to it—a mixture of old paper, wood smoke, damp earth, candle wax, or the subtle fragrances associated with a particular home or period of time. These impressions can provide valuable clues about the spirit attempting to communicate and can help establish their identity.”
“I have also found that scent is often linked to a spirit's emotional state. Warm, comforting fragrances frequently accompany spirits attempting to reassure loved ones, while stronger or more unusual scents can be associated with a spirit trying to draw attention to itself. Much like a living person entering a room wearing a familiar perfume or cologne, spirits sometimes seem to use scent as a way of announcing, "I'm here."”
“These sensory experiences can serve as a form of identification and comfort for those receiving the communication. While sceptics may dismiss them as coincidence, those who have experienced a sudden, unmistakable scent connected to a departed loved one often describe it as one of the most profound and personal forms of spirit contact they have ever encountered.”
Lorna Parker:
“Can you hear spirits?”
Trinity Jenna:
“Some empaths can hear spirits, while others may not possess that particular ability. Just as people in everyday life have different strengths, some are visual learners, others are auditory or intuitive, the same appears to be true when it comes to spiritual perception.”
“Personally, I can hear spirits, and it is the primary way I communicate with them. This ability is often referred to as clairaudience, meaning "clear hearing." However, spirit communication is rarely as simple as hearing a voice speak across a room. It can manifest in many different ways.”
“At times, I hear words, names, or phrases distinctly within my mind, separate from my own thoughts. On other occasions, communication arrives as a complete sentence, a memory, or an emotional message that seems to carry the personality of the spirit communicating. Some spirits speak softly, while others are remarkably direct. In certain cases, I have heard voices that retain characteristics from life, including accents, speech patterns, humour, and favourite expressions that family members later recognise.”
“One of the most interesting aspects of clairaudience is learning to distinguish between your own inner voice and information coming from an external spiritual source. For many developing empaths, this is the greatest challenge. Genuine spirit communication often arrives unexpectedly, carrying information that the medium could not have known beforehand. It tends to have a different quality to ordinary thought, more immediate, complete, and distinct.”
“Not every spirit communicates through words. Some communicate through emotions, mental images, or symbolic impressions. For example, rather than saying they were a carpenter, a spirit may repeatedly show images of woodworking tools or the smell of freshly cut timber. The medium must then interpret these impressions and understand the message being conveyed.”
“I have also found that spirits communicate differently depending on their personality. Some are eager to speak and make their presence known, while others are quiet observers who prefer to communicate through subtle impressions. Children, in particular, often communicate through feelings, simple words, or imagery rather than lengthy conversations.”
“However, not every empath can experience spirit communication through hearing. Some rely more heavily on visual impressions, intuitive feelings, telepathic messages, physical sensations, or symbolic imagery. A highly visual medium may see detailed scenes from a spirit's life, while a clairsentient empath may simply feel the emotions the spirit wishes to express.”
“Every empath is different, and spirit communication often develops through the senses that are naturally strongest for that individual. In my experience, the most effective communication occurs when several senses work together. I may hear a name, receive an image, sense an emotion, and detect a familiar scent all at the same time. When those pieces align, they create a much clearer picture of who is communicating and why they have chosen to make contact.”
Lorna Parker:
Can a spirit or ghost possess empathy or remain psychic?
Trinity Jenna:
“You should know better than to ask this Lorna, however, this is a fascinating question and one that has long been debated among mediums, spiritual practitioners, and paranormal researchers.”
“In life, an empath is someone who is highly sensitive to the emotions and energies of those around them. They often absorb feelings from living people, sometimes experiencing emotions that do not belong to them as if they were their own. A medium, meanwhile, is generally understood to be someone who can perceive information beyond the normal physical senses, whether through intuition, visions, precognition, or other extrasensory abilities. A medium acts as a bridge between the living and the spirit world, communicating with those who have passed on.”
“Your question is whether these abilities survive physical death.”
“From my own experiences and observations, I believe that many aspects of a person's spiritual nature continue after death. If an individual was naturally intuitive, empathic, or psychically sensitive during life, there are occasions when those traits appear to remain part of their spirit identity. Personality does not seem to vanish when someone crosses over. Humour, compassion, protectiveness, curiosity, and even certain talents often remain evident during communication.”
“I have encountered spirits that seem remarkably aware of the emotional states of the living. They appear capable of sensing grief, fear, anxiety, or happiness in those they are attempting to reach. In some cases, spirits seem drawn to individuals who are struggling emotionally, offering comfort through subtle signs, dreams, or impressions. This suggests a form of empathy that continues beyond physical existence.”
“Similarly, some spirits demonstrate an awareness of events before they occur or provide information that appears beyond what they could reasonably know from their own lifetime experiences. Whether this represents psychic ability, heightened spiritual awareness, or simply a broader perspective gained after death remains open to interpretation.”
“There is also the possibility that once freed from the limitations of the physical body, consciousness may function differently. The barriers that separate thoughts, emotions, distance, and even time may not operate in the same way in the spirit world. What we describe as psychic abilities among the living may simply be a natural state of awareness for spirits.”
“I have often felt that spirits communicate not only through words but through direct emotional understanding. Rather than telling me they are sad, worried, or protective, they allow me to experience those feelings myself. This form of communication is immediate, profound, and often more meaningful than spoken language. It suggests that empathy is not merely a human trait but may be an intrinsic quality of consciousness itself.”
“Of course, these ideas remain part of spiritual belief rather than scientific fact. Yet after years of communication with spirits, I have come to believe, and know, that death changes the form of a person, but not necessarily the essence of who they are or were. If someone was compassionate in life, they often remain compassionate in spirit. If they were intuitive, they may continue to perceive the world in ways that transcend ordinary understanding.”
“Perhaps the most intriguing possibility is that the gifts we call empathy, intuition, and psychic ability are not lost when we die. Instead, they may become clearer, freer, and more natural than they ever were during life.”
Lorna Parker's Final Thoughts
"Spirit communication remains one of the most fascinating and debated aspects of paranormal research. Whether through sight, sound, scent, or intuition, experiences vary greatly from one empath to another, and no two encounters are ever exactly alike."
"For our Trinity, hearing spirits and recognising the unique signatures they leave through familiar voices, emotions, and scents forms an important part of her connection with the spiritual world. Over the years, she has developed a deep understanding of how spirits communicate, often recognising subtle patterns and behaviours that others might overlook."
“There is a familiarity to spirit communication," Trinity explains. "The longer you spend around spirits, the more you begin to understand that they are individuals. They carry memories, personalities, habits, and emotional connections that don't simply disappear. Every spirit has its own presence, its own energy, and eventually you learn to recognise those differences.”
"Her observations often suggest a perspective shaped by an unusually intimate understanding of the spirit world. Rather than viewing spirits as mysterious apparitions, Trinity speaks of them almost as neighbours separated by a thin veil, each carrying traces of the lives they once lived."
"'People often think of the spirit world as something distant', she says. 'But in many ways, it feels closer than most realise. The living and the dead are not as disconnected as we imagine. Sometimes all it takes is a familiar voice, a scent carried on the air, or a sudden feeling of recognition to remind us that those connections still exist'."
"It is this quiet certainty, coupled with years of experience investigating the unexplained, that has made Trinity Jenna one of the more intriguing voices in modern paranormal research. While she rarely claims to have all the answers, her insights often leave listeners with the impression that she understands the world of spirits from a perspective few others can truly appreciate."
"And how she does this will remain with ProParanormal... Trinity Jenna is OUR secret!"
Lorna Parker:
“Trinity, can you tell us what senses you use to detect spirits?”
Trinity Jenna:
“There are several senses through which spirits are believed to communicate, and every empath or medium experiences these connections differently. Just as no two people perceive the world in exactly the same way, no two spiritual communicators receive information in exactly the same manner.”
“Sight is perhaps the most recognised form of spirit perception. Some empaths are highly visual and may see full-bodied apparitions, shadow figures, flashes of light, or fleeting glimpses in their peripheral vision. Others receive mental images rather than physical sightings, almost like photographs appearing briefly in the mind's eye. These visual impressions can provide clues about a spirit's identity, appearance, personality, or even events from their lifetime. It is important to understand that spirit sightings are not always dramatic. More often, they are subtle, lasting only seconds before disappearing.”
“Hearing, known by some spiritual practitioners as clairaudience, is the primary way I communicate with spirits. Spirit voices can vary greatly. Sometimes they sound like an external voice spoken into the room, while at other times they are heard internally as clear thoughts that do not feel like my own. In certain cases, the voice may retain characteristics it had in life, such as a distinctive accent, tone, speech pattern, or favourite phrase. Spirits may communicate single words, names, emotions, or complete messages. For many mediums, hearing develops gradually over time and becomes more refined with experience and practice.”
